At least thirteen passengers killed and 98 hurt in rail accident in Mexico.

A tragic train crash in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite critical opposition regarding the rapidity and handling of the country's key public works projects.

The disaster took place on the Interoceanic Train, a line built to join the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was designed to offer an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, intended to promote regional growth in the area.

“We are going to rigorously clarify the cause of this accident,” affirmed the head of state.

The official reported that, of the some 250 people on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in grave condition. The president added plans to go to Oaxaca to meet those affected.

Key Undertaking of Previous Administration

The Interoceanic Train was a signature infrastructure project of the immediate past president, whose presidency ended the previous year. This venture was a hallmark of his leadership's developmental vision for the southern region.

Another ambitious rail project from that era, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the comprehensive effort to kickstart the economic fortunes of a relatively disadvantaged part of the country.

Project Execution and Safety Concerns

The building of both railway systems was managed by the nation's military, marking a notable expansion of its role in civilian works. They were executed at an rapid speed, defying predictions to be partially inaugurated before the end of that presidency.

However, this fast-paced schedule had concurrently sparked ongoing questions over construction quality.

  • Sunday's derailment was the third event on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
  • This includes an previous collision this month when a train smashed into a truck at a level crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also had two non-fatal derailments.

Calls for Review and Suspension

In the aftermath of the disaster, the head of a major opposition party urged an urgent halt in the development and management of all such projects.

This pause was suggested pending a comprehensive technical review. The party declared that the situation "demands immediate answers."

In reply, the president insisted that the train had been functioning in total compliance with all security protocols. Commitments were given that the government would be "diligent" in both the development and operation of these strategic projects.
