Approximately 50 vehicles have been smeared with what appears to be human blood in the German municipality of Hanau in proximity to Frankfurt, police confirm authorities.
Cars, building surfaces and postal boxes were vandalized, sometimes with Nazi symbols, they announced in a release.
Officers report they were alerted in the late hours on Wednesday, when a man discovered that a vehicle in the Lamboy district of Hanau had been covered with a reddish fluid.
The fluid had been drawn in the pattern of a Nazi symbol, they added.
Officers then discovered many other smeared automobiles and residential walls in the nearby vicinity.
These symbols are prohibited in Germany under laws banning the visible presentation of Nazi-era symbols.
Police say early analysis show the fluid was likely blood from a person.
"There is still no lead as to where it came from; investigators are presently not aware of any harm in connection with the event," they added.
Municipal representatives said they were working "to solve the incident" and have appealed to the community for tips.
A high-ranking representative said the attack made him without words and required to be solved promptly.
"This act strikes at the very heart of Hanau and reawakens the pain of the right-wing terrorist attack half a decade ago," he posted on online, recalling the murder of nine victims by a shooter targeting individuals of foreign heritage in five years prior.
