Tetris Couldn't Win at The Game Awards — An Additional Classification May Address This Issue

Each time a prominent awards ceremony approaches, one notices a clamor for introducing additional classifications to honor overlooked contributions and delight the spirits of followers dedicated to specific genres.

Another commentator has already made advocating for terror-themed awards. It would be amazing. The same goes for strategy board titles, which is a passionate advocate's mission. However, I must insist for pushing forward since similar to single-minded supporters, I have a cast-iron argument supporting my request is the most urgent and significant. Here's the proposal: There should be a classification for brain-teasing titles.

The Genre Classification Challenge

Categorizing art by genre isn't exact; opinions vary greatly, and typically generate discussions and end in fuzzy definitions. There’s a reason cinema institutions avoid this approach. However, it represents a necessary evil within the realm of video games, which are so diverse they barely qualify a single creative category.

For comprehensive acknowledgment of achievement in video games to gain proper attention, while allowing diverse titles to compete fairly, genre categories are essential.

Current Gaming Award Categories

Prominent interactive entertainment events presently include award types recognizing Action, Action/Adventure, RPG experiences, Fighting, Sim/Strategy, plus athletic and racing experiences. Between them, these six categories actually cover a lot of ground, making space possible for numerous titles.

This doesn't apply to logic-based experiences. No appropriate category exists to accommodate them. Examine these examples from recent excellent titles, showing diverse approaches: building puzzles in a particular game, intense tile-matching of another game, engaging interpersonal challenges from additional release. What category would fit them between these six categories? Nowhere, that’s where.

Acknowledgment Issues

There are dozens outstanding logic titles released every year lacking appropriate categories during gaming ceremonies, if they accidentally match classification types such as Handheld titles, Virtual reality experiences, or the intensely contested Indie races.

  • One classic puzzle game received no recognition completely that year
  • Another imaginative release missed out during that ceremony
  • A beloved organization game received no acknowledgment that year
  • Only a few brain-teasers scraped into small studio or handheld classifications

Importance of Logic Titles

Commonly they're compact experiences, however the design of the puzzle game is of massive significance. Famous handheld logic titles count as the most-played games globally continuing this trend for over a decade.

The legendary block-stacking game rivals famous sandbox experiences competing to become highest-selling title ever; it’s also in the running for top gaming experience. Logic titles represent cornerstones for gaming as medium, and engaging across multiple categories.

Recommendation and Reasoning

Puzzle games wouldn’t have that issue. It would be easy to populate a field of five engaging, different, qualified experiences each ceremony simply — actually, with challenge, because you’d have to leave so many good games out.

Restating the point, these are games lacking appropriate categories in important events. Puzzle game makers function at the hard edge game development, producing among most fundamental forms within interactive entertainment. Just like movie stunt professionals, they deserve recognition. We shouldn't delay 35 years.
